THE BICHON’S BREED SPECIFICITIES

Popular throughout history, Bichon Frises are small, lively and merry dogs, deeply attached to their owner. Their naturally curly, pure white coat is as soft as velvet and largely responsible for their popularity.

The breed's origins

The Bichon Frise can trace its history all the way back to the 14th century but was only recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1972. These small, curly-haired dogs (as their name translates) were beloved lapdogs of King Henry III.

They’ve since become beloved by many, ranking in the top 50 most popular breeds in the United States.

Fun facts

A SENSITIVE URINARY SYSTEM TO KEEP AN EYE ON

The Bichon Frise is predisposed to urinary stones that form in the bladder or urinary tract. The cause is a low volume of urine and an insuffi cient number of mictions. An optimal mineral content within the framework of a balanced diet can limit this disorder.

SKIN AND COAT TO PROTECT

The Bichon Frise’s coat grows constantly and therefore requires regular grooming. Known for his sensitive skin, he needs a specifi c diet that will provide him with the essential nutrients to reduce irritation and help keep his coat pure white.

IDEAL WEIGHT TO CONTROL

The Bichon Frise is essentially an indoor dog and might have a tendency to put on weight. To prevent overweight and keep his joints healthy, he must have an adapted diet that boosts muscle tone. He should also be exercised daily

Smart and Sturdy

Bichon Frises are sturdy lap dogs, weighing between 4.5 and 9 kilos and reaching 30 centimetres tall. They are easy to train and love to learn new tricks! However, these dogs do require some work. Their double coat of hair doesn’t shed, which is a relief for allergy sufferers, but they require regular grooming because that hair just keeps growing.

Health and Wellness

Bichon Frises are healthy dogs that can live for a very long time. However, given their lapdog disposition, they’re prone to weight gain. The Bichon Frise can also be prone to dental disease, so make sure to brush their teeth regularly. You can also find food with a kibble specially formulated to help reduce tartar formation. Some foods will also include ingredients to help keep that beautiful coat in tip-top condition.
