A long flowing coat, for an imperial cat

The breed's origins

The world’s most prestigious cat breed owes its name, but not all its origin, to the fascinating empire of ancient Persia.

No one really knows the Persian cat’s true origins, but long-haired cats were recorded in both Turkey and Persia as early as the 17th century. Launched onto the scene at London’s Crystal Palace in 1871, the Persian’s ancestors moved in the highest spheres of the European aristocracy, the breed has never been eclipsed since.

Fun facts

Sovereign beauty

A long, luxurious coat, with a dense undercoat, is the hallmark of the Persian cat. No other cat has a coat as long and dense as the Persian. Hair on the ruff can reach 20 cm in length. Extra protection and regular grooming are needed to maintain the health of the Persian’s sensitive skin and bring out her coat’s beauty.

Typically brachycephalic, a unique eating method!

Unlike other cats, the Persian’s ’flat’ face means she has to pick up her kibbles with the underside of her tongue. This makes picking up a classically-shaped kibble more difficult.

A predisposition to hairballs

The Persian cat routinely swallows a large quantity of hair while grooming her long dense coat. This is accentuated by her indoor lifestyle, which results in permanent moulting. To limit the risks of hairballs, which can result in digestive problems, regular grooming and adapted nutrition are essential.

Growth is an essential phase in the Persian kitten’s life for her future health and well-being!

Her growth deserves special attention because she already has some typical breed characteristics which must be taken into account.

Persian - Did you know?

Icon A splendour in miniature
During growth, the Persian kitten develops her breeds’ hallmark, a long silky coat, which needs to be nourished right from the start.
Icon Digestive sensitivity noticed by breeders
Her digestive system continues developing gradually but remains immature. That’s why selecting high quality protein is key to guarantee maximum digestibility for the Persian kitten.
Icon Challenged natural defences
Growing up means change and new experiences at a time when the kitten’s own immune system is still developing.
Icon A unique way of picking up food
Her brachycephalic head shape leads the Persian kitten to use a sublingual method to pick up her food. She needs an easy kibble which doesn’t roll around.
